An answering machine is a device for automatically answering incoming telephone calls and recording caller messages for playback later on. They're commonly used to inform the caller that the recipient is unavailable to answer the phone, and asks them to "leave a message" for the recipient to call them back later on. Answering machines should not be confused with voicemail, which is a networked system, while answering machines are typically dependent on the telephone itself.
