Daring adventurers, sailing the world looking for treasure and thrills, involved in chivalry and love tales, masters of sword fighting are some traits of the archetype of a swashbuckler. While originally seen as men that "made noise by striking (swash) on a shield (buckler)" challenging passerby to duels, they evolved into heroic and idealistic characters in early European adventure novels. The bicorne, a two cornered/horned hat, is just one of many hats worn by pirates during the 1650s.
