Zombies, or Infected, are the main antagonists in The Last Stand series. Zombies appear to have lost all sense of humanity, possessing only their most basic instincts in addition to the unusual desire to feed on uninfected individuals. While the exact cause of this anomaly is unknown, it was most likely a type of infection. The majority of people that are bitten by a zombie also turn into zombies, which explains why the infection spread so rapidly.

HERC, an acronym for Homeland Environmental Risk Control, is a fictional government organization in The Last Stand: Union City and The Last Stand: Dead Zone. When the infection broke out, HERC was called in to Union City and the surrounding regions to investigate and research the outbreak, as well as setting up quarantine zones to contain it. During their operations, they fired on and killed many civilians, as well as conducting involuntary experiments on recently bitten people at their outpost in Uptown. They later pulled out of the city, leaving many of their quality weapons behind, which can be obtained in HERC Supply Boxes.

The blue variant can be obtained through crafting, and all three can be found in Treacherous Trick or Treat Trunks. It is very effective in low-level missions due to its decent damage, high knockback, and fast attack speed. However, it is one of the noisiest melee weapons in the game, and the weapon loses effectiveness in more difficult missions.

July 2015EditThe Last Stand: Dead Zone that may occur when survivors take damage when their health is below 50%, when their health is fully depleted, or when they are caught outside the exit zones when a mission ends. Injuries are divided into two categories: minor and major. Survivors can receive minor injuries if they take damage whilst their health is below 50%; a major injury is incurred if they are incapacitated. All injuries remove a portion of health that cannot be healed during missions or raids, as well as decreasing certain skills depending on the type of injury and penalizing morale, with the effect of major injuries being greater than those of minor ones. All injuries heal by themselves given enough time, although they can also be healed immediately with medical items or with fuel. Read more >>
August 2015Editsurvivor class in The Last Stand: Dead Zone. Scavengers have the highest scavenging speed of any survivor class, and they increase the chance of finding items on missions by 2%. However, their low health, combined with their poor fighting skills, makes them ineffective in combat, requiring them to be supported and defended by more proficient survivors. Read more >>
September 2015Editlocation featured in The Last Stand: Dead Zone. They are an abundant source of food, water, weapons, and ammunition. The level of a suburban street is always two levels higher than the area it is in.
Suburban streets are very large maps, so having a dedicated scavenger is a must in order to reach all the containers. Zombie spawn points are scattered across the map, and will likely result in zombies coming from every direction. In addition, a number of containers are positioned very close to the spawn points, making them very dangerous places to be.
The map, however, does offer survivors a number of advantages. There are few shot-blocking obstructions, which allows survivors to detect and pick off zombies from a distance. Low-lying fences around the front yards of the houses restrict movement but not gunfire; survivors can seek shelter behind these fences, which will buy them more time to shoot as zombies will have to detour around the fence to get at the survivors.
The Raid on Union Island is a special player vs. environment mode featured in The Last Stand: Dead Zone that permits the player to launch a direct attack on HERC. It is only available for players who are at or above Level 50, and can be initiated by clicking on Union Island on the map. Players can select up to five survivors to attempt the raid, along with any weapons and gear they may have. Ammo cost is only applied once during the raid, although the player cannot change or modify the survivors and their weapons and gear, and cannot heal their injuries, until the raid ends. Any survivors sent on the raid cannot leave the island until the raid is completed, abandoned, or if they are incapacitated. There is no time limit on completion of the raid.
The island is divided into three locations: The Bridge, the Monument, and the Compound. Each of the three may either spawn infected or human enemies, but never both. If the map spawns infected enemies, the raid functions similarly to a normal mission. If the map spawns human enemies, the raid is similar to that of a regular compound raid. All locations have the same objective — reach the exit zone within ten minutes. At least one survivor must be on the exit zone when the timer expires in order to move on to the next location.
Raid points can be earned during the raid. Points are earned by successfully bringing survivors to the exit zone, and from completing optional secondary objectives. A special "Raid Haul" containing three random items will be awarded to players who complete the entire raid with at least 50 or more raid points. Players who earn more points will receive a better quality raid haul. Read more >>
November 2015Editsurvivor class in The Last Stand: Dead Zone. Medics are the only survivor class, aside from the Leader, who can heal other survivors. They also possess a high movement speed, allowing them to reach patients quickly. However, they have the lowest health of any survivor class, and have the worst combat skills; as a result, they are best used as a support role in combat. Their ability to heal, however, is invaluable in high-level missions, and they are required to craft many medical items. Medics work well with Fighters and Engineers, whose high health can offer protection. Read more >>
The Compound is a location in The Last Stand: Dead Zone. It is the final part of the Raid on Union Island, and is the highest level location in the entire game. Compounds typically drop large amounts of weapons, gear items, and ammunition, along with some food and water.
The map is very large, with its many containers scattered across the map. The infected variant of the map has a high spawn rate which, combined with the map's incredible size, make it difficult for survivors to scavenge all the containers without a scavenger. Most zombie spawn points are located along the edges of the map, with the notable exception of a spawn point in the middle.
The two HERC variants of the map both offer two routes to the exit zone. One route involves fighting more HERC troopers, while the other has more snipers and mines to worry about. All routes involve entering the compound in one way or another.
The State is the region where the events of The Last Stand series take place in. While it is referenced in all four games of the series, it is only explored in-depth in The Last Stand 2. The state's real or colloquial name is not known, only being referred to in-game as "The State".
The state's capital appears to be Union City, the largest and most populous city with 350,148 residents. Population-wise, it is followed by Jonestown, with a population of 100,027. All other cities and towns in the state have a population less than 100,000; listed in decreasing order of population, the remaining towns are Claysburg, Glendale, Whistler's Grove, and Aspenwood. The state is also home to Fort Tran, a military base, whose population is unknown. The western part of the state appears to be heavily forested, possibly based upon the Appalachia region, home to popular hunting spots. The eastern portion of the state contains 90% of the state's urban population, and may be a part of (or a reference to) "BosNYWash".
During the outbreak, HERC and the military organized quarantines around the state in a failed attempt to contain the infection. The government begins evacuating survivors in Union City, prompting an exodus of the western towns. A dramatic increase in infection rates in Union City induces the government to end evacuations prematurely and to seal off the mainland, effectively trapping those still on it.
The Military Base is a searchable location featured in The Last Stand: Dead Zone, and contain large amounts of weapons, gear, and ammunition. The level of a base is always three levels higher than the area it is in.
Military bases are some of the largest maps in the game, usually rectangular in shape and filled with many containers and zombie spawns scattered across the map. They are often divided by sandbags and fences, restricting movement but not gunfire. Zombies tend to spawn in large, relentless amounts, especially during horde attacks, making it a dangerous map for a lone survivor to attempt.
Long rifles and assault rifles, along with an LMG and a shotgun, are the best options for the map, and are useful for covering all situations. Bringing a team of five survivors and keeping them together at all times is strongly recommended. Read more >>
In The Last Stand: Union City, books are one-time skill boosters, with each skill in the game having their own associated skill-increasing book. The effectiveness of books is directly connected to the player's Smarts skill. Eleven different types of books exist in the final release of the game, although the player can read multiple copies of the same book, and receive the same boost in skills from each one.
In The Last Stand: Dead Zone, books play a similar role to mods in that they affect gameplay, either for the player's benefit or detriment. Books can be found while scavenging, opening supply boxes, purchased directly from The Store, or as bonus rewards for purchasing fuel. Unlike its predecessor, books are equipped; up to four may be equipped at a time, and only one from each of the five book categories: Combat, General, Mission, Resource, and Survival. Some books may be equipped indefinitely, while others have an expiry time. Some books may also lock out the slot they occupy for a period of time, preventing the player from removing them until their lockout timer expires. Read more >>

The Leader is a survivor class in The Last Stand: Dead Zone that doubles as the player's character. The Leader's level and XP influences the level of the compound. Leaders are incredibly versatile, able to take on roles normally played by other survivor classes, and are the only ones, aside from the medic, who can heal other survivors during missions. They are specialized with all weapons, and will always gain XP from missions, even when they are not physically present. Players have the option to upgrade a Leader's skill group when they level up, which can be used to fill in for any unavailable specialists. Read more >>
